The authority to conduct the DoDRP is the United States Code, 2012 Edition, Supplement 4, Title 10 – ARMED FORCES, Subtitle A – General Military Law, PART 1 – ORGANIZATION AND GENERAL MILITARY POWERS, CHAPTER 3 – GENERAL POWERS AND FUNCTIONS, Sec. 127b – Department of Defense Rewards Program.
The Secretary of Defense may pay a monetary amount, or provide a payment in-kind, to a person as a reward for providing U.S. Government personnel with information or nonlethal assistance that supports:
- An operation or activity conducted by U.S. forces, or of allied forces participating in a combined operation with U.S. forces, outside the U.S. against international terrorism.
- The protection of U.S. forces, or of allied forces participating in a combined operation with U.S. forces.
The amount or value of a reward under this section may not exceed $5,000,000.
